Rooftops of Riquewihr

You’ll find these steep, snow-capped roofs and centuries-old houses in the French village of Riquewihr, in the Haut-Rhin area of Alsace, bordering Germany and Switzerland. Nestled between mountains and vineyards, Riquewihr was one of the few villages in this area not to be badly damaged during World War Two. Many of its buildings and colourful homes date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and feature the original courtyards, wells and fountains while its cobbled streets are lined with half-timbered houses, shops and restaurants. Winemaking is a huge part of life in this region. Riquewihr is one of the villages along the Alsace Wine Route, one of the most famous wine routes in France, stretching more than 100 miles through wine-producing towns and gorgeous villages.
