A big day Down Under
Many Australians fire up the barbie to mark Australia Day on 26 January - the anniversary of the arrival of Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet of 11 British ships at Sydney Cove in 1788. This aerial view showcases a much-photographed Australian attraction - Heart Reef, a 56ft (17m) wide natural heart shape, discovered in 1975 by a local pilot. It’s no longer a hidden secret, having become one of the most popular areas of the Great Barrier Reef - one of Australia’s most famous attractions. From that natural wonder to the rugged bush and the dry Outback, we invite you to join the diverse people of Oz in celebrating their island nation (although, owing to the time difference, as our Australia Day begins, theirs is nearing its end).
