Beethoven's 250th

German composer Ludwig van Beethoven created melodies and harmonies which are instantly recognisable, two centuries later. Overcoming childhood abuse, hearing loss, romantic rejection and bouts of depression and alcoholism, Beethoven channelled his emotions into music. In the process, he helped to end the regimented Classical era and usher in the Romantic period.
