Barley field in East Lothian, Scotland

Today, we're in the East Lothian area of Scotland, where large swathes of countryside are covered in golden barley fields. Barley was one of the first cultivated grains, having been domesticated when farming first began about 10,000 years ago. Barley has been one of Scotland's main cereal crops since the Middle Ages. It is used to feed animals and is grown for the production of malt to supply the region's local beer and whisky industries. It can also be used in breads, breakfast cereals, porridges, stews and soups such as Scotch broth, which is a popular meal in this part of the world.
