Munk's pygmy devil rays, Gulf of California, Mexico

Munk's devil ray is a large fish with a flattened body, found in tropical parts of the eastern Pacific Ocean. The waters off the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico is the perfect place to spot devil rays in massive groups. Unlike stingrays, devil rays lack fearsome pointy tails. In fact, these fish are quite gentle, feeding mainly on plankton. During gatherings like this in our photo, devil rays will leap out of the water and perform acrobatic jumps before flopping back down with a splash.
